A free video to text tool that works from a link

Sometimes you only need the words: a quote from an interview, the steps from a tutorial, the script of a Short you want to reuse. transcription.page gives you that text without downloading anything. Paste a link from YouTube, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels or TikTok, and the transcript appears in a few moments, split into readable paragraphs. It works in any browser on your phone or computer, it is free, and you don't need to create an account.

When the platform already has captions for a video, we use them. When it doesn't, the audio is transcribed with OpenAI's Whisper speech recognition model running on our server. Either way you get the same tools: timestamps, a short summary, search, and exports to TXT, Markdown, SRT, WebVTT and JSON.

How to transcribe a video to text

  1. Copy the video link

Use the Share button on YouTube, Instagram or TikTok and choose Copy link.

  2. Paste it and start

Paste the link into the box at the top of the page. If the video isn't in English, pick its spoken language in Settings first.

  3. Read, copy or export

Read the transcript as paragraphs or with timestamps, then copy it or download it as TXT, Markdown, SRT, WebVTT or JSON.

What you get with every transcript

  • Clean, readable text

The transcript is split into paragraphs, or one sentence per line if you prefer, so it is easy to read and reuse.

  • Timestamped segments

Each segment shows when it was said. On YouTube, clicking a timestamp opens the video at that exact moment.

  • Quick summary and key points

A short summary, a few key points and topic hashtags are pulled from the transcript automatically.

  • Search inside the text

Type a word to find and highlight every place it appears in the transcript.

  • Five export formats

Download TXT, Markdown with the summary, SRT or WebVTT subtitles, or JSON for your own scripts.

  • History in your browser

Your past transcriptions are kept in your own browser so you can reopen them. Nothing is saved on our server.

Frequently asked questions

Is transcription.page really free?

Yes. You can transcribe videos without paying and without creating an account. There is nothing to install either: everything happens in your browser, on a phone or a computer. Paste a link, wait a moment, and the text is yours to read, copy or download in the format you need.

Which platforms can I transcribe videos from?

You can paste links from YouTube (regular videos and Shorts), Instagram (Reels and video posts) and TikTok. The video has to be publicly viewable, because our server needs to access it the same way a visitor without an account would. Links to private or restricted content won't work.

How long can a video be?

Videos can be up to 10 minutes long. That covers almost all Shorts, Reels and TikToks, and many YouTube videos. For a longer video, the tool will tell you it is over the limit; you can look for a shorter clip or a version of the content that has been split into parts.

Which languages are supported?

The spoken language of the video can be Arabic, French, English, Spanish, German, Italian or Portuguese. Choose it in Settings before you start so the transcription matches the audio. The interface itself is available in Arabic, French and English. Transcripts are not translated: you get the words in the language they were spoken.

How does the tool get the text?

If the platform already provides captions for the video, we use those. If it doesn't, the audio is transcribed with OpenAI's Whisper speech recognition model running on our server. The quality depends on the recording: clear speech with little background music gives the cleanest text.

Do you keep my videos or transcripts?

No. The audio is downloaded temporarily so it can be transcribed, then deleted. The transcript is sent back to your browser and is not stored on our server. Your history of past transcriptions lives only in your own browser, and you can clear it at any time from the History panel.
