Darija deserves better than a rough conversion to Standard Arabic

Most transcription tools turn Darija into Standard Arabic, or garble it: dialect phrases are rewritten and French words disappear. transcription.page first recognises which variety of Arabic is spoken in the video. If it is Darija, transcription is guided to write words as they are pronounced, with the dialect’s expressions and the French or English words mixed in.

If the video is in Standard Arabic (news, lectures, speeches), it is transcribed in careful Standard Arabic; if it is another dialect, it is kept as is. Then the Translate button makes the video understandable in English, French or Standard Arabic, for the diaspora, students or anyone who doesn’t speak the dialect.

How to transcribe a Darija video

  1. Paste the link

A YouTube video, Instagram Reel or TikTok in Darija.

  2. Keep the original language

The variety of Arabic is recognised automatically. You can also force “Darija (Maghrebi Arabic)” in the language menu.

  3. Read, translate, use

The Darija text, then a translation, a summary or your questions in the Use it tab.

Questions about Darija

Which Darijas are supported?

Algerian, Moroccan, Tunisian and Libyan. Other Arabic dialects (Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf) are also transcribed as spoken.

What if the transcript comes out in Standard Arabic?

Choose “Darija (Maghrebi Arabic)” in the language menu under the link bar and run it again: transcription will be guided towards Darija.

Are songs transcribed well?

Music gets in the way of speech recognition: a song is transcribed, but less faithfully than someone talking.
